Perhaps one of the most thoroughly wholistic of all of the Guild's practices and practitioners is Lorraine Simone and her brainchild of the past eight years, Moonfire Meeting House. Lorraine has integrated her educational and business backgrounds along with a passionate connection with the spirituality and philosophy of Native American cultures. Her practice promotes the healing process of the individual through the Earth and of the Earth through the expanded consciousness of each individual.
Moonfire's mission is "Birthing a partnership society in communion with the Earth". Activities at Moonfire take many forms. Day and evening programs on a wide spectrum of topics are available to the community at large and have included everything from reflexology to nutrition to the sacredness of everyday life. For those with a greater ability and interest to devote themselves there are group intensives which meet for weekend long retreats over the course of a year. The bonding which takes place and the resulting atmosphere of trust and commitment within these groups makes possible a unique and very special opportunity for growth. Also at the intensive study level there are available through Moonfire and with Lorraine's tutelage individual apprenticeships. Through an apprenticeship one can find one's path, whether it leads to a new career or it helps overall to deepen and define a personal sense of connectedness and spirituality.
Lorraine's background, and what makes her eminently and uniquely qualified to carry out her mission at Moonfire started with her own quest for substance which as a child she found lacking in the culture and religious teachings she was raised with. So, as she explains she "came in this way". Her formal educational training led to a master's degree in Educational Ecology which she made use of both as a teacher in the New York City school system and as an entrepeneur, owner and proprietor of a store called Planet Earth where she sold an array of Earth and ecology oriented items.
She has studied Native American philosophy for many years and uses the tenets of these teachings as the foundation for Moonfire's approach of viewing the Earth and our place in it with a sense of inclusiveness, whereby the interrelatedness of all things is understood. This concept of inclusiveness contrasts the currently dominant Western ideology which fragments the world in an effort to analyze and understand it.
An accurate mark of our level of growth and development as a species will be the degree to which we successfully integrate our collective understanding of this existence in all realms, from the scientific and analytical achievements of the West to the philosophical and inclusive ideologies of ancient indigenous societies. A truly sophisticated and advanced human community will be capable of understanding the paradoxical nature of these macro and micro levels as one and the same. Moonfire Meeting House is about facilitating this process.
